Detector resolution is the real image
Thermal detector resolution counts temperature-sensing pixels. Marketing may display or export a larger image through interpolation, but it cannot create missing thermal detail. More true detector pixels help with small targets and wider scenes.
Focus and distance change the use case
Fixed-focus modules are quick for walls, rooms, and larger equipment. Adjustable focus helps with circuit boards and close inspection but slows capture. Minimum focus distance and field of view determine whether the subject fills enough pixels to be useful.
Temperature range is not the same as accuracy
A broad range may allow hotter targets while giving up sensitivity or accuracy in ordinary building temperatures. Compare stated accuracy, thermal sensitivity, measurement modes, and whether the product is intended for quantitative measurement or visual detection.
Shiny surfaces can lie
Thermal cameras read emitted and reflected infrared energy. Polished metal may reflect the temperature of the room or operator rather than reveal its own temperature. Emissivity settings, viewing angle, surface treatment, and comparative measurements matter.
Who should buy one
A thermal module makes sense for repeated electronics, HVAC, insulation, mechanical, or educational inspection. For a single home question, renting a higher-grade unit or hiring a qualified inspector may produce a better answer for less money.
