A pocket radiation detector makes ionizing events visible as counts, alarms, trends, or spectra. The display can feel definitive, yet different detector materials respond very differently to alpha, beta, gamma, and X-ray radiation. The first buying question is not which counter is most sensitive—it is which radiation and decision you are trying to investigate.

Watch out: The enclosure and tube determine effective particle response. It cannot identify isotopes, and counts from different detector models should not be compared directly.

Geiger tubes count events
A Geiger-Müller tube produces a pulse when ionizing radiation triggers an avalanche inside it. Tube type, window, enclosure, geometry, dead time, and calibration determine what reaches the detector and how counts relate to an estimated dose. A model that detects gamma well may be physically unable to admit alpha particles.
Scintillators trade simplicity for information
A scintillation detector converts radiation into light and can be substantially more sensitive to gamma radiation than a small Geiger tube. Some instruments also estimate energy spectra that can help distinguish patterns. Identification is still interpretive and depends on calibration, statistics, geometry, and software—not a magical isotope label.
Background is a distribution
Natural background changes with altitude, geology, building materials, weather, detector sensitivity, and counting interval. Compare repeated measurements in consistent conditions and allow enough time for counts to accumulate. A brief spike does not automatically establish contamination or dose.
Know when the hobby meter stops
Consumer instruments are useful for education, comparing locations or objects, logging background, and finding changes within their documented capability. They are not a substitute for a calibrated survey meter, contamination protocol, dosimetry program, public-health guidance, or emergency response. Never handle an unknown source to get a better reading.
