A software-defined radio moves much of a radio receiver's processing into software. With suitable hardware, antenna, and software, you can visualize and decode certain over-the-air signals. What you may receive, decode, record, or transmit depends on local law and the service involved.

Start by receiving public broadcasts
Broadcast FM, weather services, amateur-radio activity, aircraft position broadcasts where permitted, and public satellite transmissions are common learning targets. Receive-only projects teach tuning, gain, filters, modulation, and antennas without adding transmitter complexity.
The antenna is part of the instrument
An expensive receiver connected to the wrong antenna can perform worse than an entry-level receiver with an appropriate one. Antenna length, design, location, feed line, connectors, and interference determine what reaches the receiver. Begin with one band rather than buying a bag of unexplained adapters.
Know the receiver's limits
Compare frequency coverage, instantaneous bandwidth, bit depth, oscillator stability, filtering, and susceptibility to strong nearby signals. A wide tuning range does not mean equal performance everywhere. Cheap receivers can overload in dense radio environments.
Privacy and law still apply
The fact that energy reaches an antenna does not grant permission to intercept, decode, retain, or share a communication. Rules differ by country and service. Avoid private communications, access-control systems, and anything prohibited locally. Transmitting requires suitable hardware and may require licensing.
A sensible first kit
Start with a receive-only SDR supported by mature software, one antenna suited to a lawful target, the correct adapter, and possibly a short USB extension to move the receiver away from computer noise. Learn with known signals before adding amplifiers or filters.
