Define the mission

Choose one primary task: a distraction-free writing station, field-data terminal, portable development environment, radio display, equipment console, or offline reference library. The mission determines whether battery life, compute power, ports, sunlight visibility, or keyboard comfort deserves priority.

Choose the computing core

A single-board computer offers accessible expansion and community support. A small x86 computer provides familiar desktop compatibility and often more performance at the cost of power. An old phone can be the most efficient core when the workflow fits mobile software. Confirm operating-system support before buying accessories.

Treat power as a system

Add the sustained draw of the computer, display, storage, radios, and conversion losses. Select a power source and regulators with margin, proper protection, and connectors suited to the load. Avoid loose lithium cells or improvised charging circuits unless you have the knowledge and equipment to design them safely.

Input and display decide whether you use it

Tiny keyboards photograph well but can be punishing for real work. Test the intended key spacing and pointing method. Match display brightness, pixel density, size, and connection type to the operating environment. E-ink is excellent for static information and poor for fast interaction.

Prototype before making an enclosure

Assemble the full system on a desk, measure power consumption, test sleep and boot behavior, and complete the intended task several times. Only then choose a case. A modular plate, electronics case, or camera bag often produces a more repairable first build than a permanent custom shell.
